§ Mr. Peter BottomleyWe received 16 written responses and a similar number of telephone inquiries from local authorities to traffic advisory unit leaflet 1/87. The main purpose of the leaflet was to publicise and exchange information on ways of controlling traffic in residential areas in the interests of improved safety and environmental improvement. Implementation is primarily a matter for local authorities.

§ Mr. Peter BottomleyThe Government's commitment to seek to reduce casualties by a third, and the report's range of ideas and suggestions for consideration have been generally welcomed. Discussions are continuing with a wide range of bodies on many aspects commented on in their memoranda, letters and at meetings with the Department.
Action is being pressed ahead on urgent items such as vehicle safety improvements, research on road behaviour and attitudes, road engineering features and measures to improve the skills of young motorcyclists.
We propose to take stock later this year of the directions and priorities that have emerged from the consultative process.
