Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment in how many cases a local authority's refusal of planning permission was(a) the subject of an appeal to him and (b) upheld by him in the last year for which figures were available; and what equivalent figures he has for the city of Durham.

In 1987, the number of appeals received against planning decisions of local authorities, or their failure to determine applications, the number of such appeals decided by the Secretary of State or inspectors appointed by him, and the number dismissed were as follows:
