HC Deb 29 February 1988 vol 128 c482W
Mr. Leighton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what are the latest numbers of homeless people in the London borough of Newham; and what is the cost to the borough.

Mrs. Roe

The number of households accepted as homeless by the London borough of Newham in July to September 1987 appears in "Local authorities' action under the homelessness provisions of the 1985 Housing Act: England. Supplementary tables".

The latest information available from the borough on the costs incurred in the operation of the homelessness provisions appears in "Homeless Statistics, 1984–85 actuals", published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy. Newham did not respond to the 1985–86 and 1986–87 surveys. The figures cover all the costs falling outside the Housing Revenue Account and the hostel and lodging house costs falling on the HRA: the costs of HRA dwellings used either permanently or temporarily to house the homeless are not included.

Copies of both publications are available in the Library.
