Mr. Frank Cook

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy whether his Department has commissioned or intends to commission, studies evaluating the cost-effectiveness of the subsidies, both direct and indirect, including tax reliefs, given to(a) the nuclear industry, (b) the oil and gas industry, (c) the coal industry and (d) the energy efficiency-renewable energy industries; what these are in 1987 prices; and if he will make a statement.

My Department's current support for the areas in question is described in volume II, chapter 6 of the public expenditure White Paper "The Government's Expenditure Plans 1988–89 to 1990–91", Cm. 288, published in January 1988. The cost-effectiveness of this support is kept under regular review.
