To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many three and four-year-old children in each local education authority area in England are in(a) full-time and (b) part-time nursery education in private nursery schools; and what percentage of the estimated three and four-year-old population in each local education authority area this represents for the last year for which figures are available.

The information requested on the numbers and percentages of children in maintained nursery education in January 1987 is given in the table. Information on the average hourly attendance of these pupils is not collected centrally.
