To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what projections he has made of levels of recruitment of Catholics to the Royal Ulster Constabulary over the next five years.

Mr. Stanley

I understand that no such projections have been made; nor could they be made meaningfully, being dependent on the quality and background of all future applicants. The RUC will, however, continue its long-standing efforts to recruit Roman Catholics to the RUC and the RUC Reserve.
