To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what further consideration he is giving to the future development of Newbattle abbey college.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

My right hon. and learned Friend is not prepared to continue funding the college on the present basis. But he is prepared to consider proposals which would benefit significantly more people than at tend Newbattle and which made better use of other existing means of entry to higher education.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the representations he has received concerning the proposed withdrawal of funding from Newbattle abbey college.

We have received 126 representations from hon. Members and others following announcment of my right hon. and learned Friend's decision to withdraw funding from Newbattle abbey college at the end of the 1988–89 academic year. My right hon. and learned Friend has met the hon. Members for Glasgow, Garscadden (Mr. Dewar), for Midlothian (Mr. Eadie) and for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth (Mr. Hogg) to discuss his decision.
