To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the latest estimated cost of the Trident missile project to date.

Mr. Sainsbury

As announced by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State on 21 January, at column775, the currently estimated total cost of the United Kingdom Trident programme is £9,043 million (at 1987–88 prices and £1 = $1.62). Actual expenditure to the end of December 1987 was £1,370 million.
