§ 97. Mr. CranTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many divisions within his Department have been relocated out of London since 1979; what plans he has for further relocation; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. SainsburyIt is not possible to provide this information without undue cost and effort. However, the Glasgow dispersal programme has resulted in 1,330 jobs moving to Scotland and will meet its 1,400 target later this year. The overall number of civilian employees in London has fallen by over 10,000 since 1979, though this reduction also reflects the continuing search for efficiency and economy in the Department.
Future relocation possibilities will continue to be examined; but moves must be justifiable in both operational and economic terms.
