Mr. Bowis

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will estimate the proportion of school time currently spent on core subjects in(a) inner London and (b) England and Wales.

Information about the percentages of pupil time spent on core curriculum subjects in England is given in the table. No figures are available for indivdual local education authorities in England. Education in Wales is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.

Note:

1. Junior classes do not include infant classes, but do include secondary-age classes in middle schools deemed primary.

2. The junior figures are as at March 1987, taken from the Primary School Staffing Survey.

3. The secondary figures are as at January 1984, taken from the 1984 Secondary School Staffing Survey.
