21. Mr. Robert G. HughesTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any plans to have any further discussions with the BBC and the independent television companies about the effectiveness of their self-imposed regulation of the content of programmes shown before 9 pm and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. RentonWe shall keep in close touch with the broadcasting authorities over the next few months on a wide range of issues including their responsibility for enforcing programme standards. The Government recognise the need for stronger and more effective oversight of standards relating to the portrayal of violence and sex on television. My right hon. Friend has announced our intention to set up the Broadcasting Standards Council which will provide a focus for public concern about these matters.
