What is the purpose of the complete enclosure by wooden scaffolding of Stanley House in Marsham Street and Great Westminster House in Horseferry Road at present occupied by staff of the MAFF; when work on the building is planned to begin; and how long the scaffolding will stay up; whether the staff are to be moved from these conditions and if so, when and to where; and what is to be the future use of this building.
The Minister of State, Department of the Environment (The Earl of Caithness)The fan scaffolding surrounding Stanley House and Great Westminster House was erected by the freeholders, who are responsible for the structure of the property. Recent investigations by the freeholder have revealed some spalling of the concrete on the external elevations of the building and the purpose of the scaffolding is to avoid any danger that might arise to members of the public. I am advised that the freeholders do not propose to effect any repairs and their intention is that the scaffolding should remain in place until they demolish and redevelop the building. Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food staff are due to leave the building by September 1988, on lease expiry. They will move to Nobel House in Smith Square and Ergon House in Dean Bradley Street.
