To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish a table showing the number of people in receipt of single payments and the total amount of single payments made in each of his Department's offices in the Leicester area in each of the years 1983 to 1987.

Mr. Portillo

Information concerning the number of people in receipt of single payments is not available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.

The total number and cost of single payments made by each of the Department's local offices in Leicestershire is given in the table.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he has had representations from local authorities concerning the difficulty of making arrangements for the processing of personal data in connection with the administration of the new benefit system; and if he will make a statement.

I am not aware of any representations arising from the use of personal data in the administration of rebates or allowances from April 1988. If the hon. Member is aware of any particular difficulty perhaps he could let me know.
