HC Deb 18 February 1988 vol 127 cc728-9W
Mr. Michael J. Martin

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) if he will take steps to prevent Colstor secondary school, Springburn, from closing;

(2) if he will take steps to prevent Elmvale primary school, Springburn, from closing.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

Decisions about the closure of schools are primarily for education authorities and they require my right hon. and learned Friend's consent only in the circumstances prescribed under the Education (Scotland) Act 1980.

Mr. Michael J. Martin

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will take steps to prevent St. Bede's primary school, Balornock, from closing.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

Decisions about school closure are primarily a matter for the relevant education authority subject to my right hon. and learned Friend's consent in prescribed circumstances. Because St. Bede's is a denominational school, his consent would be required if the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church were to object to any decision to close it.
