To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Peckham (Ms. Harman) of 11 December 1987,Official Report, columns 295–96. if he will be able to provide the information requested after the new system for collecting maternity statistics, as set out by the steering group for health services information, comes into operation on 1 April.

From 1 April 1988, information collected on all births, in NHS hospitals and elsewhere, will include: the method of delivery, the birth weight, the highest level of care received by the baby, the length of stay of the baby, the intended place of delivery, and the actual place of delivery.
