HC Deb 16 February 1988 vol 127 c537W
Mr. Irving

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what action he is taking to encourage commercial collection from Government Departments and other producers of greater or lesser amounts of waste paper, to reduce litter, and smoke from burning and save imports.

Mr. Brooke

I have been asked to reply.

Her Majesty's Stationery Office collects some 20,000 tonnes of waste paper and allied materials per year from Government Departments throughout the United Kingdom. Of this, more than 17,000 tonnes are commercially shredded and pulped for the manufacture of cardboard boxes and similar products. The balance comprises security materials, some of which are disposed of by burning, and other products unsuitable for recycling. Her Majesty's Stationery Office already advertises these services, but I have asked it to consider whether more could be done to encourage other public sector customers to use the facility.
