HC Deb 16 February 1988 vol 127 cc536-7W
Mr. Robertson

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what categories of people have been invited to the Lancaster house conference on the internal market; if they include trade union representatives and Opposition hon. Members of the House; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alan Clark

[holding answer 15 February 1988]: Invitations will be issued shortly. The Lancaster House conference is primarily for British business, and we are inviting nearly 200 senior representatives from all the main industry and service sectors.

Mr. Robertson

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what are his estimates of the employment implications for each category of employment of the completion of the European Community internal market in 1992.

Mr. Alan Clark

[holding answer 15 February 1988]: Completing a single Community market of 320 million people should bring substantial economic benefits, helping to create wealth and employment in this country. The effect on the pattern of employment in the United Kingdom will depend on a number of factors, including the way British business seizes the opportunities of a single large market to increase sales and improve their competitive performance in Community and world markets.
