To ask the Minister for the Arts if he will list the grants made by the Arts Council to each of the 12 English regional arts associations by the Arts Council for each year from 1977–78 to 1987–88, inclusive, and the grants proposed for them in 1988–89.

The information requested is as follows:

actual payment of cash to the Inland Revenue in respect of acceptance of works of arts in lieu of tax; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Luce

[holding answer 15 February 1988]: Subject to parliamentary approval, supplementary provision is being made so that the sum of £7,329,000 may be paid in due course to the Inland Revenue, in respect of three works of art accepted in lieu of tax in 1987–88. Two have already been accepted: Constable's "Stratford Mill" (tax satisfied £5.5 million), and Picasso's "Weeping Woman" (tax satisfied £1.2 million). The offer of a third item (which would be similarly funded) is in the final stages of agreement. Further details will be made available when the acceptance has been completed.
