HC Deb 16 February 1988 vol 127 cc568-9W
Mr. Buchan

To ask the Minister for the Arts if he will list the grants made by the Arts Council to(a) the English National Opera, (b) the National Theatre, (c) the Royal Opera House and (d) the Royal Shakespeare Company for every year from 1977–78 to 1987–88 inclusive, and the grants proposed for them in 1988–89.

Mr. Luce

The information requested is as follows:

English National Opera National Theatre Royal Opera House Royal Shakespeare Company
£ £ £ £
1986–87 6,576,000 7,811,400 13,096,500 5,197,000
1987–88 6,748,000 7,811,400 13,226,960 5,197,000
1988–89 6,917,000 17,811,400 13,491,270 5,326,500
1 An additional sum of £105,600 is reserved for the National Theatre and may be made available on receipt of a three-year plan showing, inter alia, financial break-even.

I have increased the grant to the Arts Council in 1988–89 and subsequent years to enable it, in part, to provide more assistance for touring within the United Kingdom and overseas. The national companies may well receive increased funding on this account, and also from the incentive funding arrangements now being devised.
