To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the assessment of children with special learning difficulties.

Mr. Dunn

Under the Education Act 1981 local education authorities are required to assess the needs of children in their areas who have learning difficulties and to ensure that suitable educational provision is made for them.

74. Mr. Boyes

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he has any plans to increase the staffing ratios for the teaching of children with special educational needs; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dunn

Current guidance on the staffing of special schools and classes is set out in DES circular 4/73. The Government hope to consult on the draft of a revised circular during the year.
