Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what was the rate of unemployment for the York travel-to-work area, in January of each year from 1978–79.

Mr. Lee

The following information is in the Library. Unemployment figures are not comparable over the whole period because of changes in the coverage of the count, and in the boundary definitions of the travel-to-work areas. The table shows the number of unemployed registrants in the York travel-to-work area as defined in 1978, at January of each year from 1979 to 1982, the number of unemployed claimants in that area at January 1983, and the number of unemployed claimants in the travel-to-work area as defined in 1984 for January of each year from 1984–87, expressed as a percentage of employees in employment and the unemployed.

Mr. Lee

Following is the available information. Employee estimates for travel-to-work areas are derived from censuses of employment, the latest of which relates to September 1984. The table shows the total numbers of employees in employment (excluding self-employed people and members of Her Majesty's Forces), and the numbers of unemployed claimants in September 1984 in each of the requested travel-to-work areas, and also the ratio of employees in employment to unemployed claimants.

September 1984

Wirral and Chester 167,559 39,726 4.2:1
