HC Deb 12 February 1988 vol 127 cc411-2W
Ms. Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many driving tests were cancelled between September 1987 and 31 January 1988 at the driver and vehicle licensing centre, north western traffic area; what was the average waiting time between cancellation and the new appointment; and how many vacant posts for examiners there are.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

4,417 L-tests and 33 vocational (HGV/PSV) driver tests were cancelled after test programmes had been dispatched to test centres (i.e., four days before test date). No record is kept of the number of cancellations made prior to dispatch. During this period some 120,000 L-tests and 4,000 vocational tests were conducted.

Periods between cancelled and rebooked appointments were in the order of three to four weeks.

There are currently two vacancies for L-test examiners and three for HGV/PSV examiners against complements of 191 and 12 respectively.
