HC Deb 12 February 1988 vol 127 cc410-1W
Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has as to the number of passengers in inter-city coaches killed or injured over the most recent period for which figures are available; what assessment he has made of what the number would have been in each case had seat belts been worn by those concerned; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The Department's accident records do not show figures for inter-city coach services. The number of public service vehicle passengers who were injured on non-built-up motorways, A(M) and A-class roads in the last three years for which figures are available are:

1984 1985 1986
Fatal 5 12 1
Serious 85 166 65
Slight 521 671 523
All 611 849 589

The number of casualties who might have been saved by seat belts cannot be assessed.
