Mr. Goodlad

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of advertised job vacancies in(a) the Northwich travel-to-work area, (b) the Chester travel-to-work area and (c) the Runcorn travel-to-work area; what were the numbers at the same date in each of the last five years; and what each figure represents as a percentage of those unemployed but available for work.

Mr. Lee

The following tables show the number of unfilled vacancies (excluding community programme vacancies) at jobcentres covering areas closely corresponding to the Northwich, Wirral and Chester and Widnes and Runcorn travel-to-work areas in December of each of the last five years, along with the total number of unemployed claimants in each travel-to-work area. Total numbers of advertised job vacancies are not available but it is estimated that nationally about a third of vacancies are notified to jobcentres. Comparisons of the unemployment figures over the period are slightly affected by the change in the method of compiling the figures in March 1986.

Northwich travel-to-work area
Unfilled vacancies Unemployed claimants
December 1983 178 6,449
December 1984 186 6,441

and (iii) the Runcorn travel-to-work area; and what were the figures at the same time of year in each of the past five years.
