Mr. Key

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport which road repair and maintenance schemes originated by(a) his Department and (b) local authorities are now privately managed; and what plans he has to extend management privatisation of road projects.

Private agents manage repair and maintenance on our behalf in the following areas:

  1. 1. South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, and the West Midlands (motorways only).
  2. 2. West Yorkshire (motorways and part of the trunk roads).

I am not aware of arrangements for private management of maintenance of local authority roads.

We have no plans at present to extend private management of trunk road maintenance. We shall keep the possibility under review.
