To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what proportion of proposed mergers was referred to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission in 1987.

Of the 321 mergers and merger proposals which qualified under the Fair Trading Act 1973 for reference to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission in 1987, six, or approximately 2 per cent., were subsequently referred to the commission.
