Mr. Soley

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what guidelines currently apply to limitations on the exchange of information between Government Departments; and in what way this will be affected by the proposed introduction of a Government data network.

Mr. Brooke

[holding answer 8 February 1988]: Any transfer of date between Departments requires the authorisation of the Department that owns the data. This requirement will continue if the proposed GDN is introduced.

Mr. Soley

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, pursuant to his answer of 12 November,Official Report, column 277, he is yet in a position to announce the outcome of the tendering process for the Government data network.

[holding answer 8 February 1988]: No. Memoranda of agreement were agreed by Departments and the bidding consortia on 11 January. Tenders will be invited shortly.
