HC Deb 10 February 1988 vol 127 cc260-1W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what action the Government are taking as their contribution to the European child safety campaign beginning in April.

Mr. Butcher

The United Kingdom has made clear its willingness to participate in some form of European child safety campaign, provided that it is well thought through and properly targeted. Discussions have been held during 1987 with the Commission and other member states about the form and content of a campaign and we are waiting for revised proposals to come forward from the Commission. No decision has been taken on the launch of the campaign, and any action taken by the United Kingdom Government will need to be considered in the light of the Commission's proposals. My Department has already announced the start of a series of consumer safety awareness campaigns to be run over the next three years. Child safety will feature prominently among the target areas.
