To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many mountain rescue associations have submitted comments to his Department on the future of air-sea search and rescue services.

Mr. Freeman

Since 1 January 1987, seven mountain rescue organisations have submitted comments to this Department on the future of search and rescue services. A number of other organisations associated with mountaineering have also done so.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Moray,Official Report, 26 January, column 183, he will list in the Official Report the names of those organisations and individuals who have made representations to retain air-sea search and rescue services as a function of the Royal Air Force.

Representations to retain search and rescue services as a military function have been made by, or on behalf of, the following organisations:

  • Brecon Mountain Rescue Team
  • British Mountaineering Council
  • Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team
  • Hinckley Mountaineering Club
  • Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team
  • Lomond Mountaineering Club
  • Mountaineering Council of Scotland
  • Mountain Rescue Committee
  • Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland
  • Moray District Council
  • National Organisation for Outdoor Education

  • (Scotland)
  • National Union of Seamen
  • Pembrokeshire Conservative and Unionist Association (St. Davids branch)
  • Ramblers' Association, East Yorkshire and Derwent Area
  • Scottish Mountaineers' Club
  • Swaledale Fell Rescue Organisation
  • Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team
  • Wick Community Council

It is not the practice to list the names of private individuals who have made representations to this Department.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list in theOfficial Report the total number of representations he has received about the future of air-sea search and rescue services.

Mr. Freeman

Apart from parliamentary questions, some 60 inquiries or representations about the future of air-sea search and rescue services have been received by this Department since 1 January 1987.
