HC Deb 09 February 1988 vol 127 c145W
Mr. Carrington

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will make a statement on the implications for United Kingdom participation in the private trans-Atlantic fibre optic cable project of the Republic of Ireland's decision to participate therein.

Mr. Butcher

Through the decision to land a spur in the Republic of Ireland, Telecom Eireann has become the first European telecommunications administration to demonstrate a financial commitment to the private trans-Atlantic cable project. Telecom Eireann's decision is an important landmark in the success of this project and has been welcomed, in a message from my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister to the Taoiseach, as an excellent example of combined American and Anglo-Irish industrial development.
