To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will provide details of the turnover of staff in social security local offices in London and north-east regions, the resignations of staff, by grade, and overall wastage and shortfall of staff in the London and northeast regions; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Portillo

The tables give details of the turnover, wastage, resignations and shortfall of staff, in each grade, in local offices in the London north, London south and north-east regions of the Department. The latest available data have been provided in each case. The data concerning the shortfall of staff are not available by grade. Turnover is defined as the loss and movement of staff due to resignation, retirement, dismissal, death, transfer, promotion and reversion. Wastage is defined as the loss of staff due to resignation, retirement, dismissal, death and transfer to other Government Departments.
