To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people he expects to attain pensionable age in the decades commencing 1991, 2001 and 2011.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the average annual income of pensioners in England in 1974, 1979, and the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. Scott

The average total net annual income of a British pensioner couple was £5,025 in 1974, £5,185 in 1979, and £5,995 in 1985 at 1985 prices. That of a single pensioner was £2,700, £2,785 and £3,330 respectively.
