HC Deb 05 February 1988 vol 126 cc773-4W
Mr. John Browne

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received seeking the insertion of a clause in the Education Reform Bill which would require that, where a school had voted under the opt out provisions to remain under local authority control, a minimum time period should elapse before a further ballot may be held on the same subject; what response he has made; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dunn

No such representations have been received. However, in the interests of minimising disruption to schools, the Government have brought forward an amendment to the Bill in Committee to ensure that no governing body may resolve to hold a ballot if one has been held within the previous 12 months, unless the Secretary of State gives his written consent.
