HC Deb 05 February 1988 vol 126 cc799-800W
Mr. Redwood

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportion of in-patients in National Health Service hospitals develop infections or other medical conditions after they have entered hospital as a patient.

Mrs. Currie

The only such condition for which statistics are currently centrally available is for the postoperative infection. In 1984 the estimated percentage of inpatient cases with a diagnosis of post operative infection, for all RHAs, was 0.7 per cent. A figure for 1985 will be available shortly and I will write to my hon. Friend when it is to hand.
