HC Deb 05 February 1988 vol 126 c777W
Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will make a statement about current progress towards removing internal barriers to trade within the European Economic Community.

Mr. Alan Clark

We and our Community partners are making encouraging progress towards the completion of the single market by the target date of 31 December 1992. Over 100 individual measures aimed at removing barriers have been agreed in the last 18 months, 48 of them during the United Kingdom presidency in the second half of 1986. Following implementation of the Single European Act, the increased use of qualified majority voting is likely to speed up the process of decision taking.
