To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what information he has as to changes in working practices which are leading to increases in productivity; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nicholls

An increasing number of firms and plants are reaching agreements to reduce demarcation and allow more flexible working by craft and other employees. Others have achieved more efficient manning levels. These developments have clearly contributed to the substantial improvement in productivity in the 1980s.
