HC Deb 02 February 1988 vol 126 c525W
Mr. Adley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement on the progress of railway modernisation since the passage of the Transport Act 1962.

Mr. David Mitchell

Since the British Railways Board was set up in 1963 it has invested over £11.5 billion in today's prices, in renewal and replacement of the railway. It has now embarked on its biggest renewal programme since the modernisation programme in the 1950s and 1960s.
