§ Mr. Peter BottomleyThe Community's effort has been directed to the harmonisation of compulsory requirements that protect the interests of accident victims. We introduced regulations last December complying with directive 84/5/EEC to secure compulsory insurance liability for damage to property. We are not aware of other EC plans to standardise cover. Our view is that it is for individual drivers to decide what cover they require outside compulsory insurance and for insurers to decide what they are prepared to insure.
