To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1) how many children have been injured in accidents involving household glass and glazing in each of the last 10 years;

(2) how many accidents involving household glass resulted in personal injury for each of the last 10 years.

[holding answer 1 February 1988] The following estimates of the numbers of accidents involving household glass that were treated at hospitals in England and Wales from 1980 to 1987 have been made from sample data collected by my Department's home accident surveillance system. No other data are available.

These figures include the following articles: windows, doors containing glass, unfitted panes, glass cabinets, mirrors, bottles, jars, dishes, drinking glasses, binoculars, greenhouses and unspecified glass, even though the glass part of the article may not have been involved in the accident. Only some of the accidents will have involved broken glass.
