To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will estimate the numbers claiming benefit on the basis of no work being available, who are not seeking employment; and if he will make a statement.

According to the results of the labour force survey, in spring 1986 there were 860,000 people in the count of unemployed claimants who were not seeking work. Details were published in an article in the January 1988 edition ofEmployment Gazette.
