To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has on the relative road casualty figures in(a) France, (b) West Germany and (c) the United Kingdom.

Although data on non-fatal injuries are collected in France and West Germany, differences in definitions and the collection mechanisms used mean that valid comparison in casualties is restricted to fatalities.

The population, fatalities in road accidents as well as fatalities per 100,000 motor vehicles and per 100,000 population in France, West Germany and the United Kingdom in 1975 and 1980 to 1986 are shown in the tables.
