HC Deb 01 February 1988 vol 126 c507W
65. Mr. Cran

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether he has any plans to speed up the process of motorway development.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The basic motorway network is already largely in place. Its completion is a top priority within our trunk road construction programme; work on the M20 and M40 is proceeding well. The need for further development of the motorway network is monitored. New schemes are added to the programme when justified.

The White Paper "Policy for Roads in England 1987" added schemes for widening stretches of the M2, M3, M4, M6, M40, M62 and for junction improvements on the M4.

Pre-construction procedures are also kept under continuous review with the aim of minimising the time taken and improving efficiency.
