To ask the Secretary of State for Health on what date his Department first became aware of the nature of the salmonella problem giving rise to the chief medical officer's statement of 26 August; and if he will list all public warnings or information issued on this subject since 26 August.

On 13 April 1988, accumulating evidence on food poisoning associated with salmonella enteritidis phage type 4 was reviewed by my Department and the public health laboratory service.

The following public warnings and information have been issued since 26 August by my Department:

2 September Letter to Chief Environmental Health Officers of local authorites asking them to issue advice locally.
5 September Letter to major catering and hotel organisations with a copy of the 26 August public warning.
21 November Public warning, repeating warning on raw eggs and giving advice about lightly cooked eggs.
5 December Repeat public warning, adding that it was advisable for vulnerable people to avoid eating lightly cooked eggs.
