HC Deb 20 December 1988 vol 144 c225W
Dr. David Clark

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is investigating alternative measures of controlling sheep scab; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Donald Thompson

1988 marks the end of a five-year programme of twice annual national dipping. During the course of this year officials have been examining the arrangements for dealing with sheep scab in 1989 and beyond. A wide range of options has been considered, from total deregulation to maintaining the present arrangements. Before a decision is taken we intend to consult representatives of the sheep industry and local authorities, who have a key role in enforcement. A consultation document inviting comments will be issued very shortly.
