HC Deb 19 December 1988 vol 144 cc57-9W
Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many regional representatives there were on the Sports Council one year ago; how many are there now; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moynihan

The 10 chairmen of the regional councils for sport and recreation were members of the Sports Council in December 1987 and had been since February 1986. Before that, it was not the practice to appoint all the regional chairmen to the council. One of the regional chairmen is currently a member of the Sports Council. The Sports Council has, however, set up a new regional chairmen's consultative group which will meet four times a year. I will also attend these meetings in order to consult the chairmen on current Government policy where it affects sport and recreation.
