HC Deb 07 December 1988 vol 143 c236W
Mr. Butterfill

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what plans the Government have to increase employment in the tourism industry in(a) the United Kingdom and (b) the south; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lee

The Government will continue with the sound economic policies that have helped to establish an enterprise economy which is generating sustained growth. The Government's role in developing the tourism industry in England is being considered as part of the review announced by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State on July 18.

Mr. Butterfill

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what information he has on the total amount spent on tourism and leisure developments in the first six months of 1988; what are the figures compared with those for the previous six month period; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lee

The English tourist board's "Tourism Investment Report" shows that the total amount spent on projects with a value of £0.5 million or more which were completed in the period January to June 1988 was .247 million. Investment in projects under construction during the periods January to June 1988 and July to December 1987 amounted to £1,737 million and £1,005 million respectively.
