§ Mr. Peter WalkerOn 13 October 1988 the number of unemployed claimants in the Newport district, Gwent, and Wales were 6,313, 18,978 and 117,683 respectively. Unadjusted figures for 1979 are not available on a basis that enables a valid comparison to be made.
