To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the percentage increase in police pay for each year since 1974.

Notes:

1 Subject to a minimum increase of £2.50 a week and a maximum increase of £4 a week.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the present annual salary of a police constable in his or her first year of work(a) in London and (b) outside London.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The basic annual salary for police constables in all forces during their first year of service is £8,352 for those who were under the age of 22 on joining the service and £10,512 for those who were aged 22 or over. All officers receive free accommodation or rent allowance in lieu, which varies from force to force. Police constables in London get an additional £945 in London weighting and £1,011 in London allowance.
