HC Deb 26 April 1988 vol 132 cc122-3W
Mr. Pike

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish the levels of spending on(a) the mentally handicapped and (b) the mentally ill in each of the health authorities in the area of the North West regional health authority for each year from 1979 to 1987, inclusive.

Mr. Newton

Information on health authority expenditure by type of patient is not collected centrally. However, hospital costing returns submitted to the Department do show expenditure on hospitals of different types. Costing returns in respect of community health services show expenditure relating to the major areas of activity only. Thus we have information on expenditure by hospitals categorised as "Mental Handicap" and "Mental Illness", but not on expenditure on the growing volume of activity in psychiatric units in general hospitals etc. or within the community health services. Such costs are not separately identifiable centrally.

The following tables, derived from the hospital costing returns give the expenditure by hospitals categorised as mental handicap and mental illness in each of the district health authorities in the North Western region since their establishment on 1 April 1982.
