HC Deb 25 April 1988 vol 132 c18W
Mr. John Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make representations to the Soviet Government about their continued failure to grant an exit visa to Vladimir Tufeld of Moscow so that he can join his critically ill wife.

Mr. Mellor

We have made repeated representations to the Soviet authorities on behalf of Vladimir Tufeld, making clear my right hon. and learned Friend's personal interest and that of the Prime Minister, most recently on 21 April. My right hon. and learned Friend was able to meet Mr. Tufeld in February and to raise his case personally with Mr. Shevardnadze. The humanitarian grounds for his being given art exit visa are overwhelming and we hope the Soviet authorities will reconsider their decision.
